What is IELTS?

IELTS is a standardized English test developed by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia, and Cambridge Assessment English. It evaluates your English language proficiency based on real-life situations. Whether you’re planning to pursue higher education, migrating for permanent residency, or seeking employment abroad, IELTS helps demonstrate your language skills. It ensures you meet visa and admission requirements.

Types of IELTS Tests

There are two main types of IELTS tests, each designed for different purposes:

IELTS Academic

This version is ideal for students seeking admission to universities and colleges where English is the medium of instruction. It measures your readiness for academic training in an English-speaking environment.

IELTS General Training

This test is suitable for candidates applying for work experience, training programs, or immigration. It is appropriate for those considering moving to countries like Canada, Australia, and the UK. It focuses on everyday English used in social and workplace contexts.

Additionally, IELTS is available in two formats:

  • IELTS on Paper: Traditional format where Listening, Reading, and Writing are completed on paper.
  • IELTS on Computer: A modern version allowing you to take the test using a computer at an authorized test center. Usually completed on the same day.

IELTS Scoring System

IELTS scores are reported on a 9-band scale, where each band corresponds to a specific level of English proficiency:

IELTS Band Score Descriptors

Understand what each IELTS band score represents in terms of English language proficiency.

Band Score Skill Level Description
9 Expert User Fully operational command of the English language.
8 Very Good User Minor inaccuracies with a high level of fluency and understanding.
7 Good User Operational command of English with occasional misunderstandings.
6 Competent User Effective command of English despite some inaccuracies and misunderstandings.
5 Modest User Partial command of English and ability to handle basic communication.
4 Limited User Basic competence restricted to familiar situations.
3 and below Extremely Limited User Severe difficulty in understanding and communicating in English.
Important: IELTS provides individual band scores for the four modules — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Your overall IELTS band score is calculated as the average of these four individual module scores, rounded according to IELTS band score calculation rules.

IELTS Score Report and Validity

You will receive an official Test Report Form (TRF) within 3–5 days if it is computer-based. You will receive it within 7-10 days if it is paper-based. The TRF includes:

  • Unique Candidate ID.
  • Your band scores (individual and overall)
  • Test date
  • Test type (Academic or General)
  • Personal identification details

IELTS scores are valid for two years from the date of the test. You can request additional TRF copies to be sent to universities or immigration bodies, often free for the first five.

Acceptance of IELTS Scores Worldwide

IELTS is accepted by:

  • All universities and colleges in the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland
  • Over 3,400 institutions in the USA, including Ivy League schools
  • Professional and licensing bodies in English-speaking countries
  • Immigration departments like IRCC (Canada), UK Home Office, and Australian immigration

It’s essential to check with your specific institution or immigration authority for minimum band requirements.

CEFR Level Comparison with IELTS and CELPIP

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is a global standard for describing language ability. Here’s how IELTS band scores align with CEFR levels:

CEFR vs IELTS vs CELPIP Score Comparison

Understand how IELTS Band Scores and CELPIP Levels correspond to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

CEFR Level Language Proficiency IELTS Band Score CELPIP Level
A1 Beginner 1.0 – 2.5 M – 3
A2 Elementary 3.0 – 3.5 4
B1 Intermediate 4.0 – 5.0 5 – 7
B2 Upper Intermediate 5.5 – 6.5 8 – 9
C1 Advanced 7.0 – 8.0 10 – 11
C2 Proficient / Mastery 8.5 – 9.0 12
Note: The CEFR, IELTS, and CELPIP scales are not perfectly equivalent, and the mapping is approximate. Universities, immigration authorities, and professional organizations may have specific score requirements. For example, many Canadian immigration pathways commonly require CELPIP Level 7 or higher, while universities often seek IELTS Band 6.0–7.0 depending on the program.
